Daine, from'The Immortals' by Tamora Pierce, finished. For supporting waffle see this ([link]) picture.

Despite the title (I just really like the title 'wolf-speaker'), this image has more to do with Daine in 'The Emperor Mage.

I left up the WIP version because I think the finished version is different enough to make comparing them interesting - mainly for me, granted.

Daine is painted, her headdress is real feathers and the birds and monkey are old natural history illustrations. I think that seemed appropriate to me because, as I mentioned on the previous picture, there's such a sense of real natural history supporting the fantasy of the book. Grounding the picture with incredibly detailed and accurate studies of creatures does a similar job visually, I hope.

Found this on Tumblr and followed the trail here! This is beautiful! I love all the birds, and they're so well drawn!!! Mind if I ask what medium you used for this? It almost looks like pastels...

I didn't paint the birds - they're old natural history illustrations.

I painted Daine in acrylic, and the feathers are real feathers.

Oooooh! When you said they're natural history illustrations I thought you meant you looked at them and then painted them on Daine lol. That's awesome! A real multi-media deal then.

Those birds are amazing! I like how you just see a little of her hair, but it gives the impression there's more.
